The c limate consists of warm, dry summers and cold, dry winters. Saskatchewan is Canada's "sunniest" province, averaging from 2,000 to 2,500 hours of sunshine annually. Normal average temperatures range between summer (+17C) and winter (-15C). Principal industries in Saskatchewan are agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and tourism . Saskatchewan became a province of Canada in 1905 and is now home to approximately 1,000,000 people with 64% of the population in urban centres and 36% in rural areas. There are 14 cities, 147 towns, 363 villages, 35 Northern Municipalities and 297 Rural Municipalities in the province. The Government of Saskatchewan is led by Premier Lorne Calvert. Saskatchewan is situated between 102 and 110 degrees longitude west of the Greenwich meridian and between 49 and 60 degrees latitude north of the equator. In area, Saskatchewan is approximately 651,900 square kilometres (more than a quarter million square miles) in size, and takes the place as 5 th largest province. Contrary to popular belief, one half the province is covered by forest, one-third by farmland and one-eighth by fresh water.
