"How to Establish and Manage an Alfalfa Leafcutter Bee Operation"
Ukrainian Partner: Agro-Soyuz (Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) Canadian Partner: Koenders Manufacturing 1997 Ltd., Saskatchewan, Canada
Results: • New industry based on sustainable development and agricultural diversification was introduced; the raising of alfalfa seed and rearing of leafcutter bees.
• Rear leafcutter bees are adequately pollinated alfalfa, resulting in an increase in seed production to meet the demands of the domestic and international market.
 The alfalfa leafcutter bee domes are in winter storage in front of the Agro-Soyuz incubator facility.

“Rural Development on the Principles of Credit Co-operation”

Results: • Supported overall reform of Ukraine’s primary agrarian sector and contributed towards civil society development in decision-making processes that positively affect farmers’ and entrepreneurs’ social and financial status.
• Developed skills that enable rural dwellers to protect their business in an efficient manner and make correct management decisions as to management of one’s own business.
• Producers and consumers are able to conclude long term contracts, implement efficient mechanism for selling and supplying.

“Small Business Development in Rural Areas”

Results: • Addressed many of the problems facing micro-businesses and entrepreneurs, by establishing “business incubators” which provide training, information and consulting services based on the needs of rural dwellers. Eight successful business plans were implemented and 51 new jobs were created.

Results: • Created a training center for the support of agricultural service and credit co-operative development. The center developed principles for monitoring the operation of agricultural service co-operatives particularly with respect to their adherence to co-operative principles, recommendations in the transformation of consumer societies and various processing and agricultural enterprises into co-operative structures.
“Development of Market Information System in Agriculture (MISA) in Ukraine”
Ukrainian Partner: Rural Development and Legal Assistance Center (RDLAC Odesa, Ukraine) Canadian Partner: Farmer’s Independent Weekly (FIW Winnipeg, Manitoba)
Results: • Developed a stable agriculture information system which provided accurate, regular and timely information on agriculture related products to producers and processors of agricultural products, oblast and rayon state agriculture departments as well as other agricultural market players. The project achieved these objectives by expanding the scope and improving the content of the MISA weekly publication.

The commentary has been praised by its users for its usefulness and timely publication.

Results: • Solved the problems creating restrictions for youth entrepreneurship and employment; through the creation of rural business training schools for young rural people located in rural areas. This school was open for all young rural people who had the intention to become entrepreneurs but who did not have the opportunity to join higher educational institutions to get the necessary knowledge and skills.

“Improvement of access and information provision through mobile consultancy office operation”

Results: • Provided rural dwellers and small household plot owners who live in remote areas with easy access to qualified advice, information and consultation. The project achieved this goal by establishing a mobile consultancy office, which consisted of 60 consultants whom provided consultations, advice, seminars and workshops in a number of different areas including: agronomy, livestock, agribusiness, entrepreneurship, business registration, testing and a host of other agriculture related topics.

Results: • Strengthened rural communities by preparing leaders as catalysts to effectively deal with today’s changing world. “Strengthening Mykolaiv Fishers’ Association through Development of Clusters”

Results: • A cluster concept for fishing production in the Mykoliav oblast was developed as an effective way to mobilize groups of producers and/or processors, establish information exchange, assist in promoting products and develop marketing concept. It improved operating/market conditions for small fish producers and the fish production industry in Mykolaiv through the creation of 10 partnerships between small farmers and large fishing enterprises; improved dialogue with local authorities to discuss more transparent conditions for operation on local market is occurring; and adoption of recommendations and proposals on local market improvements by local authorities.

“Creation of Serials of Scientific and Research Films: Developing of the Extension Service in Ukraine”

Results: • Supported the development and promotion of extension services to agricultural producers, rural dwellers and students of extension throughout Ukraine. This was achieved through the creation of a series of four films which highlight the benefits of extension services, the films include: Agricultural Business and Environment; Development of Rural Communities, 4-H youth and Extension Education. The films have become a useful tool in the agriculture institutions, long-distance training courses, and advanced training courses in agricultural extension.

“Support of the Development of Organic Agriculture in Ukraine”

Results: • Enabled farmers and agricultural enterprises to transform farms in Ukraine to organic agricultural farming and facilitated their integration into organic agricultural food production and marketing cooperatives/ associations. The project assisted agriculture producers with entry into new markets for their products, particularly in the EU, which will increase their profitability, financial independence and sustainability.

Results: • TSAA established a strategic communication plan aimed at increasing the ability of the extension unit within TSAA to communicate with household producers and operators of small farms, with respect to the services and information community based producer groups to assist them with developing a mandate of informing the TSAA of the agricultural production needs of household producers and small farm operations.
