Contact The capital of Sumy oblast is the city of Sumy. The area of Sumy Oblast is 23,800 square kilometers or 3.9% of Ukraine’s territory which ensures it 16th place among Ukrainian Oblasts. Sumy borders Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Poltava oblasts and is also bordered on the eastern side by Russia. Sumy is administratively and territorially broken into 18 districts. The population of the oblast is 1,299,700. Sumy Oblast agriculture specializes in growing grain, sugar beet, meat and milk cattle breeding. Deep black soil constitutes 56% of land. Sumy Oblast is situated on the boundaries of two geographical zones - Polissia and Lisostep. Polissia has turf-podsolic soil and Lisostep - deep black humus soil. These black soils and dark grey podsolic soils - the most fertile soils of the world - constitute 74% of all arable lands. Climate conditions allow having high yields of grain, legumes, groats, vegetables and forage. As to conditions for growing such important technical plants as sugar beet, hemp, flax, Sumy Oblast is one of the leading regions of Ukraine.
