Contact: The capital of Dnipropetrovsk oblast is the city of Dnipropetrovsk. As of January 1, 2003, the territory of Dnipropetrovsk is 31.9 thousand square kilometers (5.3% of the territory of Ukraine) and is populated by 3,532,800 persons (7.4% of Ukraine’s population). Dnipropetrovsk Oblast is located in the southeastern part of Ukraine, in the basin of the middle and lower flow of the Dnieper. In the east it borders on Donetsk, in the south – on Zaporizhzhya and Kherson, in the west – on Mykolayiv and Kirovograd, in the north – on Poltava and Kharkiv oblasts of Ukraine. Dnipropetrovsk is administratively and territorially broken into 22 rayons. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast is located in the temperate zone. Its climate is temperate-continental. It is characterized by rather cold winter and hot summer. The coldest month is February, the warmest - July. The average annual number of sunny days amounts to 240. The Oblast is located in the steppe natural region. Agriculture is the second largest sector of this Oblast’s economy after industry. It accounts for about 8% of the total production of commodities and services in the oblast. The territory of agricultural land, used for agricultural commodity production amounts to 2,246.3 thousand hectares, or 70% of the Oblast’s territory. The main trends in agricultural development of the Oblast are: feed and forage grain, sunflower, sugar beets, vegetables. The fertile land of the Oblast allows for a high yield of agricultural crops. Large areas are occupied by wheat, corn, summer barley, sunflower, and vegetables. Information taken from the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Baseline Study Completed Project "How to Establish and Manage an Alfalfa Leafcutter Bee Operation" Koenders Manufacturing 1997 Ltd. ( Saskatchewan, Canada) and PMTO “Agro-Soyuz” ( Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine) partnered with the goal of introducing an alfalfa leafcutter bee industry into Ukraine. Key activities in the project included training and mentoring 5 leafcutter bee specialists; delivering training to the public on leafcutter bees, establishing a leafcutter bee operation, harvesting alfalfa seed; and hosting a demonstration site.
