About Rivne Oblast

The capital of Rivne oblast is the city of Rivne. The oblast is situated in the north-west part of Ukraine. The area of Rivne oblast is 20,1 thousand km2. The oblast stretches for approximately 130 km from west to east and for 210 km from north to south. It boarders Zhytomyr, Khmelnytsky, Ternopil, Lviv and Volyn oblasts of Ukraine and with Brest and Gomel oblasts of Belarus.

Rivne Oblast is administratively and territorially broken into 16 rayons. The population of Rivne Oblast is 1,173,300 persons.

The preconditions for agricultural sector development in the oblasts are poor, especially in its northern parkland regions. First of all it is because of low natural fertility of soils, swampy and over moist territories, high level of erosion in the south regions, small contour lands, and the most important – radioactive pollution of soils as the result of Chernobyl Nuclear power station accident. Because of the above mentioned reasons, regular agro technical, soil-improving, anti-erosion, environmental and economic measures must be undertaken to make for agricultural sector productivity.

Agricultural enterprises of all forms of ownership specialize in cereal, potato, sugar beets, spinning flax growing and meat/dairy production.

“Enhancing Sustainable Agriculture in Ukraine”

FarmPure Global Inc. (FPG) (Saskatchewan, Canada) in partnership with Rivne State Agricultural Experimental Station (RSES) (Rivne, Ukraine) is establishing various agricultural research and demonstration plots in the Rivne region of Ukraine. This project will not only build upon current research initiatives currently being undertaken by RSES but will also introduce new research activities that will provide Ukrainian producers with agronomic and technological know-how to help improve their overall returns. FPG and RSES plan to reach their goal by training RSES staff and extension service agents on effective research and demonstration protocols. Practical skills will be gained through the development of demonstration sites which will showcase new genetics in traditional crops as well as introduce new crop types. Local producers and public will be able to gain knowledge on project activities by attending one of two seminars where manuals outlining the observations, data and resulting recommendations will be shared from each of the test/demonstration sites.
