About Volyn Oblast

The capital of Volyn oblast is Lutsk. The Oblast is located in marshy woodlands and forest steppe physiographic zones. Its size is 20,143 square kilometers, 3.3 % of the territory of Ukraine, 19th place among all the oblasts of Ukraine. Volyn borders Lviv and Rivne oblasts and is also bordered by the countries of Poland and Belarus.

Volyn is administratively and territorially broken into 16 rayons. The population of Volyn as of January 1, 2004 was 1,048,800, 2.2% of Ukraine’s population.

Volyn Oblast is an agrarian region, it has a flat relief, moderately warm temperate-continental climate with enough warmth and moisture, fertile black soil in the south and a little less rich sod-podzol soil in the north, vast forests, a dense network of rivers and lakes, the Oblast is compactly populated, 50% of residents live in rural areas.

From an economic point of view most profitable areas remain the growth of grain, sugar beet, vegetables, potatoes, production of milk and milk products, meat and meat products.

"Development of village communities and increase of agricultural production profitability level of reclaimed areas"
 
Administration for Agriculture and Foodstuffs at Ratno District State Administration (Ratno, Ukraine) and Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) (Regina, Saskatchewan) partnered with the goal of working out the mechanism of transfer of intraeconomic reclamation systems of reformed collective farms and their legal successors into municipal property of territorial communities. Key activities will include training programs, work study in Poland, roundtables, and implementation of pilot village councils.
